Environment Week Team Building

At Spontex, we’re convinced that there’s nothing more important than taking care of our planet and the people we cherish, so for Environment Week this year we decided to do something to embrace both. The whole team along with the hog of course ;) gathered in our UK office for a special team building event focused on the challenge of sustainability and the steps that can be made to help rather than hinder the ever-growing effects of climate change. After an introduction and briefing from our Event Manager, we split up into smaller groups and headed off… some noticeably more competitively than others ;)… to tackle a total of 6 challenges, to the best of our ability… using a mixture of science, skill, mental prowess and sheer luck!

Challenge 1: Water Filtration

We were tasked with designing and building a water filtration device to clean 2 litres of dirty water... in fairness the water did look a bit cleaner at the end of the challenge but it certainly wasn’t drinkable!

Challenge 2: Insulation

Using the materials provided, we had to create insulation to stop a block of ice from melting…. all teams did pretty well with this one but we were all a bit overly generous with the amount of materials used!

Challenge 3: Renewable Energy

We had to build a hand crank machine to power a lightbulb and create our own electricity source… probably the hardest task of the day with one clear winner for the “best hand crank ever seen”!

Challenge 4: Mixed Recycling

Playing head-to- head, we were challenged with sorting the recycling into the correct containers as quickly as possible, in a fast-paced race against the clock... not as easy as it looks and those ping pong balls can certainly bounce!

Challenge 5: Re-forestation

A skill-based game again played head-to-head, where we had to use our “precision skills” to “plant” as many trees as possible to urgently lower our carbon footprint… a shovel might have been a bit easier!

Challenge 6: Sustainable home

A puzzle-based challenge where we had to connect a self-sufficient house to the Hydro, Solar & Wind energy pipelines… again not as easy as it looks especially when the clock is ticking! Each of these challenges contributed to the event finale, which revealed the winning team… well done to the greens, ironically! ;) It was a very useful, informative and fun day, rounded off with a lovely team dinner giving us another opportunity to reflect on the day’s events and to celebrate our 90th Anniversary. :) We also handed out some sustainable goodies (and sweet treats ;) ) to remind us to continue our efforts every day for a cleaner planet. <3
